The Beijing Bus Company has been ordered to pay 50,000 yuan (US$6,000) to a man injured on one of its buses.

The beneficiary of the compensation, surnamed Zhang, was thrown into the back windshield of the bus he was travelling on, smashing into a window and badly slashing his wrist.

As a result of the injury, which required hospital treatment totalling 12,000 yuan (US$1,450), Zhang also lost his job as he was unable to work.

In court, the Beijing Bus Company argued the accident was Zhang's own fault because he had not been holding onto the provided handrails.

However, this argument was rejected by the court, the Beijing News reports, which ruled the company has an obligation to ensure passengers' safety and should pay full compensation.
