Countless wreaths have been laid to mark the passing of Ge Zhenlin, one of the "Five Heroes on Langya Mountain."

Ge, who lived in Hengyang, Hunan Province, was 88. On September 25, 1941, to protect the main Chinese force and cover villagers' evacuation, Ge and four other soldiers diverted the Japanese army to a cliff on Langya Mountain, Hebei Province.

After using up all their bullets and killing more than 50 enemy soldiers, the five men jumped off the cliff.

Three died while Ge and one other comrade survived when they were caught by tree branches halfway down the cliff, the news website xinhuanet reports.
