Pingju Opera Art Festival to start in Sept. in Tangshan

China's fourth Pingju Opera Art Festival will be staged on September 17 this year at the opera's birthplace Tangshan, a city of North China's Hebei Province, according to the city mayor Zhang Yaohua on July 21, 2004.

Zhang made the remarks at a news briefing to welcome the reporters of the Second Online Tour to Hebei, which started in coastal city of Qinhuangdao July 18.

More than 20 great opera troupes around China will perform during the festival.

Zhang said the art festival is also another way to attract worldwide attention to the industrial city which also boasts varieties of art and folk operas, such as Piying (shadow play), a play in which players control the movements of characters with strings from behind the curtain.

In the festival, the city will display its advantage to lure more investment from home and abroad.

The festival is organized by China's Ministry of Culture, Hebei's Provincial Culture Bureau and the local government.

A ceramics fair will be also held from September 18 to 22 in the city.

Ceramic products from worldwide companies will be showcased at the fair with an estimated transaction volume of 1.2 billion yuan (US$ 144 million).
