The Qinhuangdao Economic and Technological Development Zone is planning to stretch to the western part of the zone in order to accommodate more investors, said Hu Yingjie, director of the administrative committee of the zone, during an interview by reporters on the Second Online Tour to Hebei July 20, 2004.

Hu said the expansion application has been submitted to the State Council and preparations are also underway. He said he was confident that it will be approved soon.

The development zone, set up in 1984 with a total land area of 117.72 square kilometers, consists of two parts -- 91.96 square kilometers of the West and 19.76 square kilometers of the East. It also covers a sea area of 23.81 square kilometers and a coastline of 7.0 square kilometers.

Hu said after the expansion, more investment will come.

By the end of 2002, the number of approved projects amounted to 3,062, including 578 foreign-funded ones, with a total investment of US$3.37 billion. The total amount of contracts was US$2.182 billion, and the actual value invested from the contracts was US$922 million.
