Hebei Economic and Trade Talks

The Hebei Economic and Trade Talks, first staged in 1984, are held on May 18 every year. It is an important event in the province's opening up.

The talks are held in different cities in the Province, with their applications approved by the provincial government. So far, Shijiazhuang and Langfang have been the hosts.

Taken the 19th talks in Langfang for example: the exhibition covered an area of 39,000 square meters with 1500 exhibition booths. More than 2,000 Chinese and foreign enterprises attended the event, displaying 80,000 items of 3,000 kinds.

The guests to the talks include senior Chinese officials, minister and vice minister of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (MOFTEC) and Chinese and foreign business people. Also take the 19th talks in 2002 for instance. Major guests included: Jiang Zhenghua, vice chairman of National People's Congress Standing Committee, Shi Guangsheng, minister of MOFTEC, Lee Soo Sung, former premier of South Korea, the ambassadors of Singapore, the ROK, Argentina and other three countries, over 20 diplomats and counselors from 14 countries, representatives of GM, Motorola and other 17 of world top 500 companies, and 18 overseas delegations.

Delegations from 12 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions including Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Liaoning and Sichuan, and over 160 experts and professors from 48 universities and academic institutions including Tsinghua, Nankai and the Chinese Academy of Sciences also attended the event. Also present were more than 1,400 foreign business people, 2,800 domestic guests and more than 200,000 visitors.

During the 19th talks, a total of 446 foreign-funded projects with US$3.99 billion of combined investment were signed, and 1,205 domestic projects of economic and technological cooperation were sealed introducing 30.1 billion yuan of capital. Among these, 67 projects each use over US$ 10 million of foreign capitals, and 122 projects each use over 50 million of domestic capitals.

Most foreign-funded projects were in tourism, trade and logistic distribution areas. Thanks to the aid of universities and academic institutions, the applications of science and technology to many projects have increased. While introducing projects to foreign business people, the organizers also invited foreign guests to recommend their projects to their Chinese partners.
