The gross domestic product of Hebei Province was 607.66 billion yuan in 2002, up 9.6% over the previous year.

Economic gross of Hebei sits the 6th among national 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, and its economic growth rate has surpassed the national average for 10 consecutive years.

Hebei is one of China's top 10 provinces with the most foreign trade volume. In 2001, the total import and export value reached US$6.67 billion, up16.2%. In the first nine months of 2002, the volume was US$4.813 billion, up 14.3%, among which, US$ 3.274 billion was from export, up 13.4%, and US$1.539 billion from import, up 16.3%.

Hebei has established trade relations with 169 countries and regions. The first four trade partners are the EMU, Japan, the US and Hong Kong. Its export volume to 39 countries and regions was above US$10 million in 2001, and the top 10 were Japan, South Korea, the US, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Britain and India, to which Hebei's export accounted for 71.28% of the provincial total.

By 2001, a total of 1,055 Hebei enterprises had been granted import and export rights, including many foreign-funded enterprises. The export products totaled 3382 kinds, most of which are quality products that sell well in the world market. Among these exports, nearly 900 kinds were registered in Hebei and more than 300 kinds were registered abroad.

In recent years, the proportion of hi-quality, hi-tech products in Hebei's industrial export has been enhanced. The export of electromechanical products, in particular, has increased by a big margin. Hebei's hi-tech products related to biology, photoelectricity, new material, computer, communication and life sciences have been listed on the State New and Hi-Tech Products Exports Catalog. Nearly 80 kinds of products report over US$10 million of annual exports, including raw petroleum, coal, cotton cloth, steel, aluminum, domestic ceramics, antibiotics, motor, metal processing tools, transport vehicles, automobile parts, electric appliances and electronics.

By the end of 2001, Hebei had used US$13.33 billion of foreign capitals, in which, foreign direct investment was US$9.69 billion and US$3.36 billion was foreign loans.

Hebei has been active in developing exhibition business. It has held various shows and fairs at home and abroad to sell products, negotiate projects and introduce foreign capitals. It has also attended various large international trade talks and products exhibitions. In 2001 alone, Hebei attended 17 international exhibitions, during which it rented 116 exhibition booths and the trade sales amounted to US$34.12 million and intentional trade valued at US$89.4 million. It also signed five cooperative projects utilizing US$7.49 million of foreign capital, and 29 contracts of intention utilizing US$30 million of foreign capital.

Besides general trade, Hebei has also made great efforts to develop other trade activities. In 2001, its processing trade reached US$590 million, and 172 contracts on projects, labor export, design and consulting were signed, involving US$ 210 million of total value (up 31.3% over 2000) and US$130 million of which was completed, up 41.9% on 2000.
