Newspapers and Magazines
By the end of 2002, Hebei had formally published 112 kinds of newspapers, and 14 of them had a circulation of over 100,000 copies. Until the present moment, the newspaper industry of the province has formed a structure of multi-level and multi-pattern. "Hebei Daily" is a newspaper directly under the provincial government.
In November 1999, it carried out the layout reform aiming at improving the quality of the news and giving prominence to the highlights, and started weekly publications upon social affairs, economic life and culture. Evening paper and newspaper about culture and life have developed very fast. For instance, the circulation of "Yanzhao Metropolis" has increased rapidly since its first issue in January 1996.
Periodicals issued in Hebei involve various fields such as politics, economy, culture, science and technology, life and so on. The province prints 58.88 million issues of different periodicals every year, many of them are very favored by the readers, which include "Selected Folktales" and "Old Men's World".
Books
In 2002, Hebei Province published nearly 2,254 kinds of books with a total impression of 0.3 billion copies. Publishing houses in Hebei have published a considerable amount of excellent books which carried forward Chinese culture and spread scientific and technological knowledge such as "A Complete Collection of Chinese Jade", "A History of Chinese Culture", "Shakespeare Gallery", "20 Years' Rural Reform in China", "A History of National Industry and Commerce Development in China" and so on.
At present, there are 8497 printing enterprises in Hebei（including copy and print）, some of them have adopted technologies such as laser typesetting, electronic color scanning, offset printing and binding linking.
The publishing houses are more and more active in self-conducted circulation. A distribution network with diversified circulation channels and purchases and sales existing together has initially taken shape. The number of book-distribution establishments has reached to 3,655, with 12,800 employees and a sales volume of 3.815 billion yuan.
Audio-video and Electronic Publishing Industry
The electronic publication from nothing to present has developed rapidly. Now there are 5 electronic and audio-video publishing units with a relatively complete system of editing, producing, printing and distribution.
They annually publish over 400 kinds of diversified magnetic tapes, video cassettes and electronic publications. "A Complete Collection of Chinese Jade" (CD-ROM) has won "Top Ten Discs" and "The Best Boundary-surface" awards in "National Election of Highly-rated Multi-media Discs, 1993-1997 Session", and has also been selected in "The 7th Mobis International Disc Competition, China Section".
