There are altogether 150 broadcasting and TV stations at provincial, city and county three levels in Hebei Province with 127 sets of broadcasting programs and 93 sets of TV programs and 12 radio stations and 12 TV stations above the city level, among which, Hebei Radio Station has News, Economic, Traffic and Literature 4 frequencies, and Hebei TV Station has 6 channels including Comprehensive News, Economy and Life, Culture and Entertainment, Sports and Health, Science and Education as well as Public Channel.
Program signals of the Comprehensive News channel of Hebei TV Station are transmitted through satellite. Currently, there are altogether 23 provincial capitals, 3 cities directly under State planning and 71 other cities outside Hebei Province that are relaying programs of this channel with over 22.8 million network entry users outside Hebei Province and a population coverage of over 1.4 billion people.
There are altogether 789 radio broadcasting and television transmitting stations (including 36 test stations), 1,417.7 km of special microwave trunk lines in Hebei Province.
The comprehensive coverage percentage of broadcasting population is 98.41% while the comprehensive coverage percentage of TV population is 98.08%. The total length of cable broadcasting and TV network is 810,000 km and there are 2,527 ground satellite receiving stations and 3.32 million cable broadcasting and TV network household users with a household entry rate of 19% (above 73% in cities). There are altogether 2.2 billion Yuan of fixed assets in the broadcasting and TV system in Hebei.
By the end of 2002, there were altogether 23,631 staff members in the system, among whom, 1,156 have senior professional titles, 3,182 have medium-grade professional titles and 4,566 have junior professional titles, taking 4.9%, 13.5% and 19.3% of the total population respectively in the system.
Broadcasting, movie and television work is also taking the lead in China in striving for the best. Since 1998, among the broadcasting TV programs by Hebei, over 140 have been granted various types of national level government awards such as China News Award, China Broadcasting Award, China Television Award and so on, among which, 4 works have won the first prize of China News Award and 17 works have been granted the first prize of China Broadcasting and TV News Award, and the quantity and grades of the awards are in a leading position in China.
Meanwhile, there are over 30 TV and broadcasting plays that have won national level prizes such as Focus Today, Sunlight Hotline and Waning Light by Hebei Radio Station and News Angle, Passion 99 and Theme of True Feeling by Hebei TV Station, which have greatly enhanced the social impacts of Hebei broadcasting and TV programs.
The technological strength of Hebei in the broadcasting and TV industry is also at the advanced level in China. In recent years, broadcasting and TV technological equipment have been constantly updated and the annual investment of over 20 million Yuan in average has been invested in the update and renovation of interview, editing, recording and broadcasting equipment in the provincial radio and TV stations and the promotion and application of digital technologies, computer technologies and network technologies, which has made the technological equipment level and technological strength of Hebei TV and Radio stations among the best in China. And in order to comply with new requirements of the audience and innovate spreading forms, we have also taken use of cable broadcasting and TV network and have taken the lead in providing broadcasting type video ordering services around the country, which, by now have been opened in Shijiazhuang, Baoding and Qinhuangdao three cities and have developed over 5,200 users. With the speed-up of upgrade and renovation of cable broadcasting and TV network in the whole province, the testing work is also undergoing for bi-directional interacting video ordering and digital TV services.
Broadcasting and TV operations for economic benefits have also undergone rapid increase. In recent years, Hebei broadcasting and TV industry has spared no efforts in developing program market, cable broadcasting and TV network market and movie and TV play market and the operating income of the broadcasting and TV industry has taken on a posture for rapid increase.
In 2001, the total economic income of the broadcasting and TV industry was 0.97 billion Yuan of RMB, two and half times higher than the 0.383 billion Yuan in 1997. In 2002, revenues from broadcasting and TV advertising were 0.348 billion Yuan, which were over 15% (from broadcasting) and 16% (from TV) of increase respectively than that in the last year. Meanwhile, besides income from broadcasting and TV advertising, the production of TV plays has also begun to enter the market and the sales income has increased. E.g. for play Miraculous Doctor, 10.38 million Yuan was invested and its sales income was 12.19 million Yuan and a profit of 1.8 million Yuan has been achieved.
