Hebei Province is located at the juncture of coastal area and the inner land at middle latitudes. It is high on the relief map in the northwest but low in the southwest.

The land surface is a complete complex of plateau, mountainous region, hills and basin which can be divided from northwest to southeast as three topographic units, that is Bashang Plateau, Yanshan and Taihangshan mountainous region and Hebei Plain. Bashang Plateau, known as Bashang Prairie, belongs to the southern fringe of the Mongolia Plateau, the average elevation is between 1,200 to 1,500 meters and the total area is about 16,000 square kilometers; hills is the main topographic characteristics while lakes scattered around.

Yanshan mountain and Taihangshan mountain contains mountainous region, hills and basins of total 90,400 square kilometers with elevation under 2,000 meters.

Hebei Plain as part of the great North China plain, covers an area of 81,600 square kilometers in the middle and southeast part of the province with average elevation of under50meters. Its continental coastlines extend 487.3km, and its island coastlines,178km, plus 132 islands.
