During the Olympic Games, the city of Athens and surrounding areas will host thousands of athletes, officials, media representatives, sponsors, IOC members, spectators and guests.
The ATHENS 2004 Accommodations Department (according to the Host City Contract) is responsible for ensuring accommodation and related services to the members of the Olympic and Paralympic Family in Athens, as well as in the other Olympic Cities.
At the same time, it makes every effort to facilitate the accommodation of the thousands of visitors and spectators who will visit the city during the Games.
The spectators’ accommodation needs will be covered, among other means, by hotels, cruise ships and rental of private homes.
Spectators and Visitors
Although it is not a contractual obligation, the ATHENS 2004 Accommodation Department is working closely with the public and private sector, in order to locate accommodation at reasonable prices for visitors and spectators, while at the same time making every possible effort to maintain control over the availability and price of hotel rooms and other lodgings in and around Athens, during Games-time.
The spectators’ accommodation needs will be covered, among others, by the:
Accommodation in cruise ships.The Cruise Ships that will enhance the ATHENS 2004 Accommodation programme are: the AIDAaura of ΜOLTKE EVENTS company, the MS WESTERDAM and MS ROTTERDAM of the Sportius Hospitality S.A. company and the QUEEN MARY 2 of the CUNARD LINE company.
The ATHENS 2004 Accommodation Department has increased the number of available top class accommodation units by securing luxury cruise ships to be berthed in the port of Piraeus.
While part of the available cabins will be used to accommodate Members of the Olympic Family, their majority will be used for visitors and spectators.

Accommodation in Private Houses.The programme will offer important advantages to the visitors, enabling them to enjoy the Games comfortably and at a low cost.
Through the Private Home Rental Programme, ATHENS 2004 secures the right conditions for providing high-quality hospitality services, to a large number of visitors who will come to Greece in August 2004. The rental of private homes, a programme which has been tried and tested in past Olympic Games, offers important advantages to the visitors, enabling them to enjoy the Games economically and comfortably.
Up to date, the supply of homes for the Homes Rental Programme has exceeded the 20,000 mark, thus enabling ATHOC to meet any demand for accommodation that might arise at Games-time. The programme’s target is to offer 6,000 homes, but the final figure will depend on the actual demand.
The Official Contractor for the Private Home Rental Programme is the company FILOXENIA ‘04 S.A., established by the consortiums “Alpha Filoxenia 2004 & Elliniki Filoxenia” in order to manage part of the Private Home Rental Programme.
The minimum stay for the private homes managed by FILOXENIA '04 is six days. Airport transfers and a 24-hour information service are among the additional services included in the rates.
In addition, spectators/ visitors wishing to book accomodation in private homes and who are residents of countries of the European Economic Activity Area (“EEA”), will have exclusively the possibility to buy their Olympic Games tickets from "Filoxenia '04".

Hospitality
Olympic Family
During the Olympic Games, the city of Athens and surrounding areas will host athletes, officials, media representatives, sponsors, IOC members, spectators and guests.
The challenge of providing appropriate accommodation facilities and services to all of these client-groups is a complex undertaking that requires careful planning and cooperation between ATHENS 2004, the Greek Government and the private sector.
Specifically, the ATHENS 2004 Accommodations Department (according to the Host City Contract) is responsible for ensuring accommodation and related services to the following:
Members of the International Olympic Committee
Heads of State, Prime Ministers and Sovereigns
National Olympic Committees (NOCs),
International Federations (IFs),
Media representatives who are not staying in one of the designated Media Villages
Sponsors and marketing partners
Fourteen thousand (14,000) rooms in first- and second-class hotels and 3,000 rooms in third-class hotels have been booked for the accommodation of members of the Olympic Family. In all, there will be 220 Olympic Hotels, including hotels in other Olympic cities.
The International Olympic Family is to be accommodated in the Athens Hilton, Divani Caravel, Holiday Inn and Best Western Ilisia hotels.
In the other four Olympic Cities the hotels that have been selected are the Hyatt Regency in Thessaloniki, the Park and Volos Palace in Volos; the Porto Rio Hotel in Patra and the Capsis Beach Hotel and Sofitel Capsis Palace Hotel & Convention Centre in Heraklio.
Media Accommodation
ATHENS 2004 is responsible for ensuring accommodation for all accredited media representatives. This may include Media Villages, hotel and/or cruise ship of various categories.
Athletes Accommodation
Athletes require safe, clean and comfortable surroundings in an environment where they can focus on training, competition, and relaxation with a degree of privacy. The ATHENS 2004 Olympic Village is based on the philosophy that the Village is not a venue, but every athlete's home!
