Traffic Management Centre
The Traffic Management Centre will operate during the Olympic Games at the Operation Room of Traffic Monitoring and Control (TMC) and will be supported by the upgraded Traffic Signalling Centre.
An Olympic Transport Operations Centre (OTOC) will operate during the Olympic Games, so as to cover the additional needs of ATHENS 2004. These are related to the control of the Olympic Family Fleet operation as well as the traffic conditions at the Olympic Road Network and around all Olympic Complexes.
Road works
The road network in the greater Attica area consists of approximately 16,000 km, of which 2,800 are newly built or recently upgraded:
Attiki Odos
The Attiki Odos is a new 70 km-long outer ring road clearway with 32 interchanges. It links Southern Greece with Northern Greece via the two National Roads Athens-Patras (N1), and Athens-Thessaloniki (N2). The Attiki Odos also links N1 and N2 with the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport.
With the Elefsina-Metamorphosi stretch now open to the public the project is virtually complete, since there is only a very small part (2.5 km) still under construction – a stretch of the Hymettos Ring Road, plus the Doukissis Plakentias Interchange.
The completion of the project will considerably ease traffic congestion on other roads. In detail:
The link from the Athens-Thessaloniki National Road to the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport will relieve traffic in the centre of Athens and on the main road arteries.
The West Hymettos Ring Road will facilitate access to south-eastern suburbs of Athens (such as Glyfada, or Voula) which have one or more major Olympic venues. It will also relieve traffic congestion on the two avenues Mesogion and Kifissias.
There will be access to the Athens-Corinth National Road from the Athens-Thessaloniki National Road at the Metamorphosi interchange and at other interchanges all the way to the Elefsina Interchange. This will to a considerable degree ease the heavy traffic on the Athens-Corinth National Road and Kifissias Ave. (both of which are major Olympic Family transport arteries).
The section of Attiki Odos between the Liossia interchange and the interchange for the Athens-Thessaloniki National Road provides access to Suburban Rail and to the main OSE railway network at Acharnon Station (SKA).
The Αttiki Odos also facilitates access to the six following Olympic Venues: the Athens Olympic Sports Complex, the Ano Liossia Olympic Hall, the Peristeri Olympic Boxing Hall, the Parnitha Olympic Mountain Bike Venue, and the Markopoulo Olympic Riding and Shooting venues.
Poseidonos Avenue
Improving Poseidonos Avenue with:
Grade separated interchange construction in Poseidonos - Alimou junction
Structure works in junctions with Amfithea and Kalamaki and
Applying traffic management measures
will greatly relieve traffic on the coastal zone, which is particularly heavy during the summer months. As a result access to Helliniko Olympic Complex and Agios Kosmas Olympic Sailing Centre will be easier and faster.
Varis - Koropiou Avenue
Varis-Koropiou Avenue connects the coastal zone with Attiki Odos and the Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos. The current road is upgraded to 2 + 2 lanes per direction.
Varis Koropiou Avenue provides alternative approaches to Olympic venues located in Markopoulo and the coastal zone.
Kifissou Avenue
Kifissou Avenue is the most important section of the Olympic Ring since it is one of the main transport corridors of the Olympic Family. Works carried out will improve transport conditions.
Works already completed:
Iera Odos grate separated interchange
Petrou Ralli grate separated interchange and
National Road Athens - Korinthos grate separated interchange
Works in progress:
Upgrade Kifissou to motorway standards (3+3 lanes), extending from Piraeus Street to Poseidonos Avenue on the coast and
Construction of a grade separated interchange in Kifissou – Poseidonos junction.
Also, upgrade two of the pedestrian underpasses and construct a pedestrian footbridge (from ISAP station to Peace and Friendship Stadium).
It connects the Olympic Village, the Αthens Olympic Sports Complex (OCO) and the other Olympic Venues north of the city with Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Complex (FCO).
Olympic Village Connection to the National Road Athens - Thessaloniki
New road construction (2 + 2 lanes per direction) from the National Road Athens - Thessaloniki to the Olympic Village.
It will provide access transport from and to the Olympic Village and will also connect the National Road with Thrakomakedones suburb.
Marathon Route and Pallini Bypass
The section of Marathonos Avenue between Marathonas and Pikermi is upgraded into a road artery of 2 + 2 lanes per direction. The urban section will have pavements and will provide connections to the Marathon Museum and The Tumulus of Marathon. A new road with three traffic lanes per direction is also under construction. This road will bypass the Pallini urban zone. These roads will provide access to East Attica, Schinias Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Centre, the start of the Marathon Route and OTE Pallini and Agios Andreas Media Villages.
Road Connection to Markopoulo Olympic Equestrian Centre
Construction of a new road, 2 + 2 lanes per direction, that will connect Markopoulo Olympic Equestrian Centre with Markopoulo Avenue.
Road Connection to Markopoulo Olympic Shooting Centre
Construction of two roads, 1+1 lanes per direction, that will connect Markopoulo Olympic Shooting Centre with the existing Lavrio Avenue.
