Public Transport plays a vital role in reducing traffic in a city and it is the citizen's transport.

The contribution of the Public Transport means to the Olympic and Paralympic Games has been proven valuable, since during the Games they constitute the main mode of transport.

Today, the Public Transport System of Athens is being extended and renovated. The following works that are currently in progress will greatly improve transport conditions:

Attiko Metro: Metro extensions of lines 2 and 3 will result in serving 680.000 passengers daily, while the new trains will fulfil the necessary specifications in order to be used on the suburban railway, which terminates at the Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos.

Athens-Piraeus Electrical Railways (ISAP):Line 1 of ISAP crosses Athens, linking the northern suburbs to the port of Piraeus. A new station, Neratziotissa, will be added to the already existing 23 stations, which will allow passengers to board the Suburban Railway as well as provide a connection to Attiki Odos.

Buses and Trolley buses:In 2004, the existing network of buses and trolley buses, which today covers adequately the entire Attica metropolis, will be enhanced by the operation of new dedicated Olympic Bus lines and the extension of operating hours.

Suburban Railway: The Suburban Railway will be a new public transport mean, which in combination with all the other fixed rail modes (metro, tram) will enhance the quality of the transport services provided, since passengers will be able to travel quickly, comfortably and reliably.

Tram (the Light Rail System):The Tram will also be a new public transport mean. Its two lines will converge at Poseidonos Avenue in Palaio Faliro. During the Olympic Games the first line will link the centre of Athens with the coastal zone, up to Helliniko (location of the former Athens International Airport) and the second line will connect Neo Faliro with Glyfada.

The combination of all public transport modes will upgrade and enhance the services provided to passengers during Games-time, leaving a great legacy for Greece.
