A community official was chosen to serve as a juror at a district court in Changsha, capital of Hunan Province, and attended her first court session on Tuesday, reports Xiaoxiang Morning Post.

Meng Fanying, a former community committee member from the city's Yuhua District, was one of the 66 jurors the district court appointed without law backgrounds.

According to an official with the court, jurors were previously selected from a pool of law professors or legal experts, but recently they employed a batch of officials who formerly worked in residential committees, women's federations and education departments because of their rich grass-roots experience.

They will receive an occupational training before starting to work. And Meng said she was satisfied with her performance in her first court involvement.
