A man who set his own house on fire in Wuhan of Hubei Province was sentenced to three years in jail for threatening public security, Chutian Metropolis News reports.

Drug-addict Chen, 32, who had repeatedly threatened to set his house on fire to extort money from his family, finally did so on October 10 last year.

The fire led to a loss of 5,000 yuan (US$600) and his mother and brother were forced to leave the city to make a living.

When the sentence was read out on Saturday, Chen pleaded that the verdict was unjust since it was his own house he burnt down. But the court said his action posed a threat to public security.
