Eight college students who peddled roses on Valentine's Day to earn some pocket money ended up losing 800 yuan (US$97), reports Xiaoxiang Morning Post.

Cao, a freshman in Hunan Normal University, Hunan Province, was the first to discover he had been given a fake note with a face value of 100 yuan (US$12).

He immediately reported it to his classmates; and soon they found they had also received several counterfeit notes.

They have reported the matter to police.
