China's top advisory body concluded its annual session in Beijing Monday morning after adopting a political resolution which calls on the nation to firmly oppose and check "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces and activities.

The Fourth Session of the Tenth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), attended by more than 2,000 advisors from across the country, opened on March 3.

"We shall unite all descendants of the Chinese nation who love the motherland to resolutely oppose and check 'Taiwan independence ' secessionist forces and activities, and contribute to the development of cross-Straits relations and the reunification of our motherland," the resolution said.

Taiwan authorities have accelerated the steps of "Taiwan independence" this year, in overt defiance to the strong opposition of Chinese compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Straits, the resolution said.

It is a dangerous step that undermines cross-Straits relations for Taiwan leader to cease the function of "National Unification Council" and cease the application of the council's guidelines on unifying with the mainland, said the resolution.

"Our determination to safeguard our country's sovereignty and territorial integrity is unshakable," the resolution said.

In the political resolution, the annual session also hailed the "socialist conception on honor and disgrace" raised by President Hu Jintao, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, at a panel discussion with the country's political advisors during the session.

The resolution said it is imperative to promote the conception and make it part of social norms.

The conception, which stresses the value of patriotism, hard work and plain living, belief in science, consciousness of serving the people, solidarity, honesty and credibility, and observation of the law, is a perfect combination of the traditional Chinese value and modern virtue, the resolution said.

Hu Jintao and other Chinese leaders Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Zeng Qinghong, Wu Guanzheng, Li Changchun and Luo Gan were present at the closing meeting presided over by Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee.

Speaking at the meeting, Jia urged CPPCC committees and members at all levels to shoulder their sacred historical mission.

"We shall take it our major task to help promote the development of our country," Jia said.

He urged CPPCC members to help the Party and government maintain social stability and contribute to the building of a harmonious society by keeping close ties with the masses, to be concerned with their interests, and reflect their opinions.

The CPPCC is a patriotic united front organization of the Chinese people, serving as a key mechanism for multi-party cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, and a major manifestation of socialist democracy.

The main functions of the CPPCC are to conduct political consultation, exercise democratic supervision and participate in the discussion and the handling of state affairs. Political consultation covers major principles and policies proposed by the central and local governments and matters of major importance concerning political, economic, cultural and social affairs.

This year's CPPCC National Committee session received 5,030 proposals, among which more than 2,200 are related to economic growth, accounting for more than 45 percent.
Nearly 4,900 proposals were put on record after examination, accounting for about 97 percent of the total.
