Four days of carbon monoxide poisoning in six counties in Northeast China's Liaoning Province has left 12 people dead with 277 others receiving treatment in local hospitals, according to the Liaoning provincial government.

By press time, 32 sufferers were still being treated, with eight of them in critical condition.

Due to the low air pressure since February 13, some residents in Yanji, Longjing, Tumen, Helong, Wangqing, and Antu counties in Liaoning Province have been poisoned by carbon monoxide, a toxic gas, due to the improper use of coal for heating and cooking, said the local government.

The local government has activated an emergency operation, sparing no effort to save the sufferers. Local media organizations are constantly reminding local people to intensify their self-protection.

"To fully stem the possibility of poisoning, keep a constant air flow and fully use up the burning coal, added experts from a local observatory.
