Shearer netted his 201st goal with Newcastle to overtake Jackie Milburn's
record of 200.
The record-breaking day comes after a week of news, as Newcastle announced
the dismissal of coach Graeme Souness on Thursday. Following the announcement,
former Newcastle defender Glenn Roeder was named the team's head coach, with
Shearer named as the assistant.
The win comes as an enormous relief for the club, which was without a win in
six league matches prior to Saturday. The win gives the club 29 points and the
15th position in the Premiership.
Charles N'Zogbia scored the team's first goal in the 41st minute. Shearer's
201st came in the 65th to double Newcastle's lead and nearly ensure the club's
win.
"It was great to see Alan get his goal, it was a moment which will stay in
the memory for a long time for everyone who saw it," Scott Parker said.
Portsmouth, who are stuck in the league's basement just ahead of last place
Sunderland, are left with their 15th loss. The club continues to struggle after
losing its second straight match. Portsmouth hasn't managed a win in the last
five league matches. Manager Harry Redknapp has tried to boost the club since
his return. He signed nine new players during the January transfer window, but
has yet to see a win following the window's final day.
Along with Shearer, Thierry Henry of Arsenal also reached a milestone
Saturday, scoring his 200th goal in a 2-0 win over Birmingham City.
Henry's 200th came in the 63rd minute after the club had already scored its
first. The win gives Arsenal its 12th in the league for 40 points and the fifth
place spot.
The team has a long list of injured players. Recently, Sol Campbell was added
to the list of unavailable players after sitting out of Thursday's training
session.
Henry has done well playing at St. Andrews, the home of Middlesbrough, where
he also scored his 100th Arsenal goal.
In other league play: Luke Moore scored once in the first half, and twice in
the second to complete the hat trick and give 12th-place Aston Villa its seventh
league win over Middlesbrough, 4-0.
Manchester United managed to keep its second place spot with a 4-2 win over
Fulham at Old Trafford Saturday. Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to lead the club
to its 15th Premiership win. United led 2-0 within the game's first 20 minutes
before Brian McBride scored Fulham's first in the 22nd minute. United holds a
six point lead over third place Liverpool, who play Chelsea on Sunday.
Bolton and Wigan Athletic finished with a 1-1 draw; Everton managed a 1-0 win
over Manchester City; West Bromwich scored two first-half goals for the win over
Blackburn, 2-0; and last place Sunderland was shutout by West Ham, 2-0.
On Sunday, Premiership continues with two matches; Charlton visits fourth
place Tottenham, and Chelsea hosts Liverpool at Stanford Bridge.
