Twelve miners were still trapped Friday in the coal mine accident in Huainan city, east China's Anhui Province, while rescue work is underway, according to local authorities.

The accident took place at 1:40 p.m. Thursday when twelve people were working at the Wangfenggang coal mine which was under construction.

Preliminary investigation shows the accident was caused by a gas explosion.

The coal mine area was blocked off on Friday morning and rescuers have carried ventilating ducts to the spot. Experts have been organized to seek possible ways to rescue the miners.

The provincial government has ordered the suspension of construction at all the coal mines in the province, which may only resume after being checked and approved by government authorities.
