An executive meeting of the State Council, or China's cabinet, agreed here Wednesday to open a portal website of the Chinese Central Government on Jan. 1, 2006.

The meeting made the decision after debriefing the General Office of the State Council on the preparation work to that effect.

The launch of the website will be one of the key measures to promote innovations in the government administration and the building of a government featuring service functions, it said.

The meeting also considers the website of great importance since it could help make government affairs more public, improve government public services and improve administration efficiency.

Administrative information should be put on the website in a timely and accurate way and the Internet-based service should be enhanced, it said.
