Michael Campbell loses course record at home golf club (AP) Updated: 2005-12-24 10:22
U.S. Open champion Michael Campbell has a mission in the new year: to reclaim
the course record at the tiny, nine-hole golf course north of Wellington where
he learned to play.
The 6-under-par 62 Campbell shot as a 16-year-old on Christmas Eve 1985 was
improved Friday by Ngamanu Clay, who played 18 holes at the Titahi Bay Golf Club
in 7-under 61.
The framed card from Campbell's record round has hung on the clubhouse wall
at Titahi Bay for 20 years.
"I've been trying to go for it for the last year," Clay said. "I've only met
him (Campbell) once, but it means a lot to beat his record. It's been up there
for a while now."
The 20-year-old Clay has won the club championship twice, plays off a
handicap of three and had a previous best round of 5-under
63.
