In September, a female student found a student surnamed Zhang who adopted abandoned cats through the animal column of Fudan University's BBS (Bullet Board System).

When she brought the cat to Zhang's dorm, she found he had quite a few cats even though he said he had only one. This aroused her suspicions. She started an investigation with other students.

At the end of last month, they received a phone call and was told that Zhang was carrying a screaming cat back to the dorm.

They rushed to Zhang's dorm and found some cats were locked in a cage, one had big scars on its neck and one cat's eye had been stabbed and kept bleeding. They took a pictures of the cats using their cell-phones.

After the exposure, Zhang wrote a confession letter on the web, admitting he had mistreated over 20 adopted cats, saying he could not prevent himself from beating the cats as a way to relieve his anger.

He also admitted that he had bought another ten cats from the pet market and treated them badly.

"Some cats were beaten so seriously that they almost died," Zhang admitted onhe web, "Some were definitely dead."

Director of Fudan University's news center Ge hui said that the school got involved and informed his parents. The school also tried to arange a psychologist for Zhang.

According to Zhang's classmates, he was a quiet person without many friends. Xiong Xiangyu, a psychologist from Shanghai Mental Health Center, said that if somebody displays continuously abusive or violent behavior, there is some problem with his personality and character development.

The misdeeds might come from mental pressures, such as frustration, anxiety, and isolation from society.
