Remembering the heroes: Canadian war veteran E.D. Shayler (centre) at a
ceremony at Stanley Military Cemetery yesterday to honour the 20 Canadians who
are buried there. The ceremony concluded the 60th Anniversary of the Liberation
of Hong Kong Prisoners of War (Overseas Event). Shayler fought both on Hong Kong
Island and Kowloon before being captured and forced to work in Japanese coal
mines during World War II. "Don't make me out to be a hero," he said. "The other
guys who were there were. I just went along for the ride."
