Peruvian Vice President David Waisman has said Peru should break off
diplomatic relations with Japan over the latter's handling of the situation
regarding former President Alberto Fujimori, according to a local report on
The recall of Ambassador to Japan Luis Macchiavello is not enough to protest
against Japan's stance over Fujimori, Waisman was quoted as saying.
He referred to the interview with Fujimori conducted by Japanese Embassy
staff in Chile following Fujimori's arrest in Santiago on Monday after he
arrived on a chartered plane from Tokyo, where he has lived since 2000.
Meanwhile, more than 100 demonstrators gathered in front of the Japanese
Embassy in Lima on Saturday to protest against Tokyo's refusal to hand over
Fujimori to Peru.
Some of them threw eggs and tomatoes at the embassy building, but no one was
injured and there were no reports of major disturbances.
