Charles, whose charity the Foundation for the Built Environment is helping to
fund reconstruction projects, said he planned "to meet some of the brave and
resilient people trying to rebuild their lives and to pay tribute to the
astounding efforts of emergency workers."
The royal tour has met a muted response in a Washington preoccupied with
scandals involving top White House and congressional figures, battles over a
Supreme Court vacancy and the rising death toll in Iraq.
Charles managed to generate some heat on Thursday, when he was greeted by
more than 1,000 cheering students at Georgetown University.
Arriving for a seminar on faith and social responsibility, Charles spent 15
minutes talking to students and staff who craned over barricades to catch a
glimpse of him — offering handshakes to many and a rare autograph on a proffered
softball to one young man.
Many in the crowd yelled "Prince Charles!" as the heir to the throne
approached — one woman adding, "Where's William?" — a reference to his
23-year-old son Prince William.
