A weeklong technology exposition on nuclear material security, jointly
organized by China and the US, was held in Beijing October 24, 2005.
Ambassador Linton Brooks, administrator of the Department of Energy's (DOE)
National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA and Sun Qin, chairman of China
Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA) presided over the opening ceremony of the
exposition.
The 2005 Integrated Nuclear Material Management Technology Demonstration was
hosted by China Institute For Atomic Energy (CIAE).
Representatives from the US embassy, the US Department of Energy and
Department of State, the CAEA and China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) were
present at the demonstration. About 100 representatives from civilian nuclear
facilities and research institutes will participate hands-on training seminars
and exercise throughout the week.
The demonstration is meant to promote the adoption of modern security
practices and technologies at civilian nuclear facilities by demonstrating
established physical protection, nuclear material control and accounting, and
international safeguards technology that provide a first line of defense against
nuclear material theft, diversion and sabotage.
Activities planned for the demonstration include joint technical work on
hardware and software, system design and installation, workshops on
vulnerability assessment and nondestructive assay, exchange of technical
personnel, training and site visits.
NNSA and CAEA are the government sponsors of the event, which is conducted
under the auspices of the DOE-CAEA Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Technology
Agreement.
