More than 500 civilians, abducted by the anti-government guerrillas from an eastern district of Nepal, were released on Wednesday, a released civilian said in Kathmandu Thursday.

"All abducted people returned safely after four days of abduction in Phidim of Panchther district, some 500 km east of Kathmandu," Rabindra Khatiwada, assistant lecturer of local Phidim college, told reporters after his release.

"The guerrillas abducted us on Sunday from Bharapa, Subhang, Panchami, Tharpu, Yoyang and Nagi villages of the district," Khatiwada said. "The abducted civilians, mainly between 17 and 35 years of age, included teachers, students and farmers from various parts of the district."

The guerrillas usually force the civilians, teachers and students to take part in their "ideological" programs and free them after a few days unharmed.

Over 12,000 Nepalese people have been killed since the anti- government insurgency took place in the Himalayan kingdom in February 1996.
