The dome was a big undertaking, indeed.

At peak time there were 900 construction workers on site building the Macao East Asian Games Dome. It took only two years from start to finish, and cost 640 million patacas (US$80 million).

The length of cable used in the construction of the dome is long enough to stretch from Macao to Shanghai. If the water pipes were joined together they would run from Macao Peninsula to Coloane.

A total of 20,000 tons of steel was used to build the dome ?enough to build 20,000 saloon cars.

Athletes and officials all speak highly of the dome, saying it reaches international standards.
"We have been to many other sports stadiums," says Liu Pujun, a gymnastics coach from South China's Guangdong Province.

"Compared with them, the dome is quite good," he says.

Liu participated in a test competition that was held at the dome in June.

Gao Jian, director of the Gymnastics Administrative Centre under the General Administration of Sport of China, says he very much appreciates the design of the stadium.

"It is world-class," he says.
