One in every two Korean restaurants in the Seoul
metropolitan area serves Chinese kimchi
, according to a poll released
Sunday, illustrating the inroads kimchi imports have made here.
Surprisingly, nine of 10 Korean food restaurants
in the affluent Seocho
district in southern Seoul admitted to using the cheaper kimchi imported
from China.
In the poll of 79,311 restaurants in Seoul and
Gyeonggi Province conducted by the Korea Restaurant Association (KRA) in
August, 39,663, or 50 per cent, said they were offering Chinese kimchi to
their customers.
Chinese, Japanese and fast food restaurants were excluded from the
poll, said the Agriculture Ministry, which released the results on behalf
of the KRA.
In Seoul, 59.9 per cent, or 39,803 eating establishments, were using
Chinese kimchi, compared with 40.1 per cent, or 39,508, in Gyeonggi
Province.
The percentage of Chinese kimchi was particularly high in Seoul's
Seocho, Mapo, Geumcheon and Yongsan districts. In Gyeonggi Province,
restaurants in Hwaseong, Anyang, Suwon and Yongin were heavily dependent
on the imported kimchi.
According to a government figure, South Korea's kimchi imports for the
first half amounted to 49,846 tons, 114.4 per cent higher than the same
period last year. In terms of value, kimchi imports climbed 136.8 per cent
to $21.55 million. Up to 99.9 per cent of all kimchi imports during the
period were from China.
Kimchi is a spicy, nutritious dish generally made from fermented
cabbage and radish that accompanies almost every Korean meal.
"Despite the surging imports of Chinese kimchi, local restaurant goers
are denied accurate information on product origin," said a ministry
official. "The government will push to introduce a new bill to oblige
restaurant owners to clarify the origin of their kimchi."
The
ministry attributed the influx of Chinese kimchi to demand for
cheaper products and the increased relocation of production facilities to China by

在汉城的瑞草区、麻浦区、衿川区和龙山区,供应中国泡菜的餐馆所占的比例特别高。在京畿道的华城市、安养市、水原市和龙仁市,餐馆在很大程度上依赖进口泡菜。
韩国政府公布的数据显示,今年上半年韩国泡菜的进口量比去年同期增长114.4%,达到49846吨。从进口额来看,泡菜的进口额比去年同期上升了136.8%,高达2155万美元。这一时期进口的所有泡菜中有99.9%来自中国。
泡菜是一种味辣、营养丰富的小菜,通常是腌制的卷心菜和萝卜。泡菜几乎是韩国人每餐必备的食物。
“尽管大量中国泡菜涌入韩国市场,当地的餐馆经营者们拒绝向顾客透露泡菜的确切产地消息。政府将推出一项新的法案,要求餐馆老板们说清楚泡菜的产地。”韩国农业部的官员透露。
韩国农业部将中国泡菜的大量涌入归结为以下两个原因:一是价格低廉的中国泡菜满足了广大餐馆老板们的需求,另一个原因是越来越多的韩国泡菜生产商将生产基地迁往中国。
