SHANGHAI: As golfers tee off today in a charity tournament, underprivileged students will get a chance at continuing school and moving on to promising future opportunities.

The IBHS Charity Golf Tournament will donate 100,000 yuan (US$12,048) for children's education in Shanghai. All proceeds will be donated to Shanghai Charity Foundation to help poor students finish their education.

The tournament, which features 20 teams from International Branded Hotels of Shanghai (IBHS) members and other top hotels in Shanghai, will be held at Shanghai Links Golf Club today.

"Shanghai presents us many business opportunities, and we intend to pay back by raising funds for charity," said William Hall, chairman of IBHS. "Being a good neighbour has never been as important as it is today. There are so many people, organizations and causes in Shanghai that are worthy of our support and desperately need it."

The IHBS is an organization that represents four and five-star hotels in Shanghai. It enables customers to access hotel news, and search for hotels and their location using an interactive map.

The event will rake in a profit of 41,551 yuan (US$5,100).

The IBHS held its inaugural charity golf tournament in 2004 and raised 100,000 yuan (US$12,048). About 70 people participated in the 2004 fund-raising tournament.

"The idea to hold a charity tournament does not come to my mind incidentally," Hall said. "It is a good idea to balance golf and charity."

He said the general managers of the top hotels in Shanghai praised the idea.

"More hotels are expecting to be involved in the game," Hall said.

"All of us involved in the charity tournament feel it's very important for every business, big or small, to be a concerned, active and contributing partner with the people and communities in which they are located."
