Davenport pulls out of China Open

World No. 2 Lindsay Davenport has pulled out of the China Open because of a strained back, organizers said Monday.

Top players Maria Sharapova and Venus and Serena Williams were scheduled to compete later in the week. All three have first round byes, putting them directly into the second round.

In first-round action Monday, Japan's Ai Sugiyama defeated her countrywoman Akiko Morigami 7-6 (3), 6-4.

The final will be on Sunday.

"The WTA was advised at 10:30 p.m. last night, Sunday, of Davenport's withdrawal due to a low back strain," the Women's Tennis Association said in a statement.

Davenport won the Wismilak International in Bali, Indonesia on Sunday, defeating Italy's Francesca Schiavone 6-2, 6-4.

Spain's Rafael Nadal won the men's portion of the China Open on Sunday, beating Guillermo Coria of Argentina in the final.
