Beijing Olympic organizers are turning to colleges for training specialized staff for the 2008 Games.

The Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG) Friday signed memorandums of cooperation with 16 Beijing-based colleges and universities, entrusting the schools with the duty of grooming students who will work as interns for the BOCOG.

Tsinghua University and Beijing University, the most prestigious academies in China, are topping the list of the universities.

Li Binghua, BOCOG's Executive Vice-President, said that a total of 706 interns specializing in fields like foreign languages, media and communications, logistics and legal affairs are needed for the 2008 Olympics.

The BOCOG also plan to recruit about 100,000 volunteers for the 2008 Olympics and Paralympics.

When asked about the differences between interns and volunteers, Zhang Zhiwei, BOCOG's Vice Secretary-General, said: "The interns will begin to work at the BOCOG as early as one year before the Games start, while most of the volunteers work only during the 16 days of the Games period."

"But they are all non-paid staff," he added.

The 2008 Olympic Games will be held on August 8-24 in the Chinese capital.
