Beijing students barred from despising non-locals

In new regulations by Beijing's school authorities, Beijing primary and middle school students are prohibited from conduct ranging from "Beijing-flavored name-callings" to discrimination against the non-locals, the Beijing Youth Daily reports.

The latest version of "The Code of Conduct for Beijing Primary and Middle School Students" has been fleshed out with new guidelines that some say follow the ever-changing society closely and is particularly suited for Beijing.

Students are barred from mistreating non-Beijingers, especially migrant workers, by mocking their strong dialect accents or playing tricks on them. Statistics shows Beijing has so far a four million-odd floating population that fuels its booming economy.

When watching sports matches, students can no longer boo the players or referees, let along pelt objects on the playing field, the code stipulates. The notorious Beijing-styled curses are also on the black list.

Apart from all of the above rules, students are warned of "superstitious activities and notions," which include fortune-telling (including that from the computer) and choosing an auspicious or lucky seat for taking an exam.

The Conduct books have already been passed out to Beijing's primary and middle school students, said the municipal education authority.
