68 die of encephalitis in mid-western Nepal

The number of persons died of encephalitis in Bheri Zone of mid-western Nepal so far has reached 68, Radio Nepal reported Thursday.

Of the total 463 encephalitis patients admitted at the Bheri Zonal Hospital, Kohalpur Hospital and Nepalgunj Hospital for treatment, 68 have died, 236 have returned home after recovery and 122 are undergoing treatment, according to the state-run radio.

The hospitals are providing free treatment service to the encephalitis patients from Banke, Bardiya, Dang, Salyan, and other districts, and majority of the victims are said to be children below 14 years of age, the radio added.

Meanwhile, the number of people, mostly children, who died of Japanese encephalitis in the districts of Terai Belt of Nepal has reached 286 so far.
