Joint air patrol on Malacca Strait to begin Sep 13
Four countries will launch a joint patrol on Malacca Strait in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on September 13, in an effort to secure the busiest sea lane of the world, Indonesian Navy said here on Thursday. The so-called "Eye-in-Sky" air patrol would be participated by Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, said Colonel Surya Wiranto, operation assistant of Western Fleet Commander of the Indonesian Navy, on the sideline of a two-day meeting devoted to discussing the safety, security and environmental protection of the strait. Each country would send at least one of their aircraft loaded with representatives to attend the patrol, he said. "September 13 is the launching (day) of the Eye-in-Sky air patrol by the defense ministers of four countries. We really need the eyes of those in the air to get information of those on the waters, " he said. The air surveillance would be conducted continuously and jointly by the four countries, he said. "There is no day without the patrol," he added. The patrol was initiated by Malaysia during the meeting of the military commanders of the four countries in early August in Kuala Lumpur. Three littoral countries, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, have launched a coordinated patrol on Malacca Strait since last year, but piracy and robbery is still rampant. Over 60,000 ships annually pass the strait which connects the Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. It serves as an economic link between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea.
