Blair press bus overturns on way to Beijing airport

A minivan containing five British journalists, two British Embassy staff and one official from Prime Minister Tony Blair's Downing Street office overturned on a motorway in Beijing on Tuesday en route to the airport.

The accident came on the second and last day of Blair's trip to China in which he held talks with Premier Wen Jiabao and followed the signing of banking and aeroplane deals worth around $1.5 billion.

The bus careered across the highway, overturned and landed on its side, said Press Association reporter Jon Smith, who was on the bus.

A cameraman from British TV station ITN helped rescue the passengers through a side window. Most had suffered cuts and bruises but Smith said he and the Downing Street official had suffered shoulder injuries.

The two were taken to hospital in Beijing.

Blair and the press contingent fly on to India on Tuesday for a two-day visit, but the flight was expected to be delayed.
