UN top official inspects mission's work in Haiti (Xinhua) Updated: 2005-08-18 13:11
UN Under-Secretary-General Jean-Marie Guhenno arrived in the Haitian capital
of Port-au-Prince Wednesday to inspect the development of the UN mission's work
in the country.
A spokesman for the UN mission said that Guhenno would meet with mission
generals and Haitian officials to discuss the situation.
The spokesman also expressed his concern over Haiti's security, and called on
all sides involved to stop their violence and cooperate actively with UN
peacekeepers.
In recent months, UN troops launched actions against militants, but the
situation did not improve much.
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan advised an increase of UN troops in Haiti
from 7,600 to over 9,000.
As three major elections approach, violence is surging in Haiti. Explosions,
kidnappings, assassinations and robberies have worsened the situation there. The
most severe unrest comes from the bastions of supporters of former president
Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
