Beijing may ease ban on fireworks
According to legislative official Suo Liansheng, the hearing sought opinions on the possibility of lifting the fireworks ban and ways to improve fireworks administration. A total of 16 resident representatives were invited to express their views on the proposal that Beijing would lift the ban on fireworks in parts of the city during the festivals and on special occasions like wedding ceremonies. Five of the representatives vowed to oppose such a partial lifting. The senior citizen envoys strongly oppose the lifting. They cited reasons as the harm of the traditional practice, noisy pollution, among others. Eleven others expressed their support for such a change in the local legislature, saying that any citizen has the right to enjoy the traditional way of entertainment. Besides, they argued, displaying fireworks is a good traditional way of celebrating the Spring Festival and an amusement for the Chinese people to mark special events, like a wedding ceremony. Legislative officials said they would study the opinions of the resident representatives and make a proposal on the lift and if possible, the new rules to administrate such a lift. Residents in parts of Beijing, hopefully outside the 5th ring road, would be able to celebrate the coming Spring Festival in February 2006 with fireworks, they added.
