Locals in mid-western Nepal have killed five armed anti-government guerrillas including three women in retaliation, Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) said Monday.

The villagers retaliated against a group of armed guerrillas who came to Kutkaiya village of Banke district, some 500 km west of Kathmandu, to abduct villagers on Sunday, RNA's Directorate of Public Relation said in a statement.

"At least five armed rebels were killed during the clash with the locals," the statement noted.

The incident comes weeks after similar retaliation by local people in Makwanpur, Dhading and Nuwakot districts against guerrillas, the statement added.

Over 12,000 Nepalese people have been killed since the anti- government insurgency took place in the Himalayan kingdom in February 1996.
