HELSINKI: China's Olympic champion Liu Xiang eased into the semi-finals of the men's 110m hurdles here yesterday at the World Championships in Helsinki.

Liu Xiang 13.73 second helsinkiClocking up the day's best time of 13.73 seconds against a high wind, the 25-year-old was only mildly satisfied.

"I had a good run today. The weather is poor and the wind is high but it is more important to have advanced into the next round," said Liu, who equalled Colin Jackson's world record time of 12.91 to win the gold medal at last year's Athens Olympics.

As the first Chinese male athlete to win a track and field gold at Athens, the title favourite Liu is also pinning his hopes on making another breakthrough at the Worlds after winning a silver medal two years ago in Paris.

Liu ran in the second of the six groups and but he did not expect it to take such a long time to start.

"I saw that the athletes in the fifth and seventh lanes had their hands on the starting line. This made me feel uncomfortable. So I raised my hand and asked for another preparation," Liu explained.

But the second start was delayed once again as the athlete on the sixth lane called for re-adjustment.
