Brazil's previous record bank heist took place in 1999, when robbers made off with 37 million reals (US$16 million in today's dollars) from Banespa bank in Sao Paulo, according to Folha Online.

The tunnel was lined with plastic and had electric lights and a floor.

Police speculated that the gang must have had about 20 members, but did not say whether they had questioned any suspects.

"They worked for several months," police said. "The gardening company had been operating since March. They had sophisticated equipment, including (global positioning systems) and experts in maths, engineering and excavation," they said.

The Brazil robbery is topped by a 1987 robbery in Knightsbridge, central London, of US$72 million.
