Olympic and World Cup champion China opened its quest for the women's volleyball world championship title with a lopsided victory over Jordan in Group A of the Asian zone qualifying tournament here on Wednesday.

The winner of the 2003 World Cup and last year's Athens Olympics, the Chinese women's team proved a class above their Arab opponents, winning by 25-2, 25-4, 25-3 in just 47 minutes.

China is now tied with Australia, which defeated Uzbekistan in straight sets earlier in the day, for top place in the five-team round-robin Group A with 1-0 win-loss record. Chinese Taipei had bye on Wednesday.

"We took the match seriously even though Jordan is no match of us," said Chen Zhonghe, the Chinese head coach.

"We will focus on our own game at the tournament as the other teams are relatively weak," he added.

Outside hitter Wang Yimei led China with 12 points and her attacking partner Yang Hao added five aces.

The lanky Chinese players, who have an average height of over 185cm, dominated the net with ease and Jordan could not save their thundering spikes at all, not to mention block.
