A court in Fuyang City, Anhui Province, yesterday sentenced a former top police official to life imprisonment for bribery, illegal possession of ammunition and failure to provide legal sources for a huge amount of property.

Zhong Yongji, then vice director of the city's public security bureau, also had all his property confiscated. He took bribes of more than 2.45 million yuan (US$302,316) from 1992 to 2003.

After retirement, Ji refused to return a handgun to the bureau. He also hid more than 1,000 bullets of different weapons at home.

In addition, Zhong couldn't legally account for about 3 million yuan worth of property. His wife, Shao Xinlian, was jailed for seven years for her role.
