Liu Xiang not in form for the worlds

As the Track and Field World Championships in Helsinki, Finland, approaches, China's Olympic hero Liu Xiang is busy preparing for a better result than that at the last world games.

Liu Xiang helsinki"As Liu is not in his best form recently, I will be satisfied if he can run better than he did in the Paris world championships in 2003," said Sun Haiping, Liu's coach, a week before they head off for the event.

In Paris 2003, Liu took the bronze there by making a great breakthrough for China's male athletes.

The 22-year-old Liu later became a Chinese superstar after winning the men's 110m hurdles in a world-record tying 12.91 seconds in Athens Olympic Games last year. This was also the country's first-ever Olympic gold for men's athletics.

A victory in Helsinki is sure to increase his heroic image and consolidate his status in the Chinese sports hall of fame, since a Chinese man has never won a gold in the track and field World Championships either.

But it is looking increasingly unlikely that he will bring home the gold from Helsinki because of exhaustion caused by his busy schedule over the last two months.
