An earthquake measured 5.1-magnitude on the Ritcher scale shook a Northeast China city Monday night, leaving one person dead and 12 others injured.

The earthquake struck Lindian county, Daqing city of Northeast China's Heilongjiang province at 23:43 and was centered about 33 kilometers north of Daqing city, China's Earthquake Bureau said.

A village named Qi Xing was worst hit, with 386 families and 1,136 homes affected, the bureau said.

An 81-year-old woman who was suffering from brain attack died for fear during the earthquake, local authorities said.

"At about 23:50, I felt the building is shaking. I got up immediately, but the shake just lasted several seconds. Many people were crowded in the street after the shock, a local resident surnamed Zhou told reporters.

The normal life of local people was not seriously affected, Zhou added.

The Daqing Oil Fields was unlikely to be affected as the quake was not very powerful and disastrous, Gao Jianguo, an expert with the National Disaster-relief Center said.

"When an earthquake occurs, people should keep calm and had better stay in the rooms, especially small ones. People should avoid going crazy and fleeing to the street. It is very dangerous." Gao was quoted as saying.

Local authorities have activated emergency procedures and sent 150 tents to the affected areas.
