Bite the bullet，咬住子弹，这一短语究竟是什么意思，它又是怎么来的呢？

Bite the bullet的意思是“忍受困难或勉为其难去做某事”。它最早出现在1891年，当时的拼法是bite on the bullet，这个短语的起源与外科手术有关，在麻醉药尚未出现的年代，医护人员在为病人动手术时会递给他们一些东西（比如皮带，如果在战场上就是子弹了），让其咬住，用这种办法缓解手术过程中的疼痛。

例如：I'd really like to go to the beach today, but I had better bite the bullet and stay home to study for tomorrow's final exam.（我今天真想到海滩玩，不过还是要勉为其难留在家里，为了明天的期末考试温书。） The president asked the board to bite the bullet to the crisis. （董事长让董事会咬紧牙关顶住这场危机。）
