Pakistani youth urged to launch movement against extremism (Xinhua) Updated: 2005-07-18 21:08 Pakistani President General
Pervez Musharraf Monday called upon the Pakistan young people to launch a
movement against extremism for achieving the goals of poverty reduction and
progress for all.
"The entire nation has to reject extremism particularly, the youth, who are
the future leaders, should stand up against the malaise and support the
government's campaign in ridding the society of the malaise therefore, you
should launch a movement, a jehad against it," Musharraf said while inaugurating
the National Youth Convention 2005 in Islamabad.
Musharraf asked the young people from around the country to reject the
extremists. Pakistan has to confront terrorism, religious extremism and
sectarian extremism and violence and therefore, the nation should reject
proponents of retrogressive thinking, he said.
"Pakistan undoubtedly is an ideological state and an Islamic republic where
the overwhelming majority is Muslim but where the minorities also enjoy full
rights," Musharraf noted.
He pointed out that the extremist forces spread discord, disharmony and
turmoil and it is imperative that the youth should join the government in its
efforts to foster unity.
"I appeal to you stand up and launch a jehad against extremism for peace,
brotherhood and unity in the society and for knowledge, progress and poverty
alleviation," Musharraf stressed.
