NEED BALANCE

"This season with the World Cup in the summer, there will be a lot of friendlies for national teams, and with five competitions we need this balance we have it in every other position...," added Mourinho.

"...and we didn't have this balance and this internal competition without him so we got him and I'm very pleased we did," he said, relishing the prospect of working with a player who was City's joint top scorer last season with 11 goals.

The 23-year-old Wright-Phillips, who has been capped four times by England, has played over 150 league games for City since making his debut in the 1999-2000 season.

Mourinho said there was one more space left for a midfield player following the departure of Alexei Smertin to Charlton Athletic on loan and Scott Parker to Newcastle United.

"It's an area where we don't have problems but we still have a space so during the open market (transfer window) if we have a chance to get a good player it would be good," he said.

Asked if that player was Olympique Lyon's Michael Essien, Mourinho said: "If the club decides not to sell, it is something we have to respect. We made the offer.

Last month, French champions Lyon rejected a bid of 25 million euros ($30.23 million) from Chelsea for the Ghana midfielder, who said last week he was still hopeful an agreement could be reached with the English champions.

Mourinho said on Sunday: "It is public that the player wants to come to Chelsea, but they (Lyon) control their destiny we cannot so, if before the market closes they decide they want to sell we are there waiting..."
