(Xinhua)
Updated: 2005-07-16 20:46

Three people, including a boy, were killed and another 9 were hospitalized after a food poisoning accident took place on Thursday in Fuyang City of Anhui Province, local police said Saturday.

Of the 9 sickened, 7 are still in critical conditions, including one with respiratory system failure and another in deep coma, said doctors with the Fuyang No. 1 People's Hospital.

Laboratory findings show the food that caused the tragedy contains a heavy amount of tetramethylene disulfotetramine, a strong rat poison.

Medical experts have been invited from the provincial capital of Hefei to make joint diagnosis and give emergency treatment, the doctors added.

At around 1:00 Thursday afternoon, 12 people, most of them from southwest China's Sichuan Province to sell cosmetics in Fuyang, had dinner together at a rented apartment of a residentialbuilding, and were later sent to hospital with such symptoms as body twitches and nose bleeding.

Local police are still investigating the case.
