At a press conference in Hong Kong on Wednesday, Tam told reporters that the concerts would be showbusiness spectaculars with a host of superstars putting in special cameo performances.

Wearing a white shirt, a white suit, a diamond-dotted tie and a giant diamond ring, Hong Kong’s pop king joked he would be 25 years old forever. “I lost my ID card when I was 25. After that, I counted each successive year as just one day, so I am still 25 years old, plus several dozens of days. I will not teach you how to count.”

To make sure he is at his peak for the concerts, Tam has been busy working out, sticking to a gruelling physical exercise regime. He confessed that he had lost 9 kg recently, including almost 3.5 kg in just one day. “I played football, danced, ran and did push-ups that day at a temperature of 34 degrees Celsius. It’s incredible to lose so much weight in just one day,” he said, and added that he expected to lose 2 more kg and to further tighten up his muscles.

Tan has invited a heavyweight list of his Hong Kong and mainland singer friends to join in as guest performers. These include Andy Lau (刘德华), Jacky Cheung (张学友), George Lam (林子祥), Deanie Yip (叶德娴), Hacken Lee (李克勤) and Dao Lang. Tan especially recommended Deanie Yip.

“I’ve been appreciating her singing for years. She has been very busy working with Andy Lau and Andy Hui (许志安). It’s finally my turn now.”

Tan also recalled the many concerts he had held in Hong Kong over the past 30 years. He said his most special experience was two concerts held in Hong Kong Stadium. In 1987, Tam staged a concert named the “Loud Sound Concert.” In 1994, however, he had to hold a “Low Sound Concert” there due to the noise control regulations. “In the latter concert, the expensive acoustics facilities were almost useless,” Tam pointed out.

To celebrate this milestone in Tam’s career, Hong Kong’s TVB is to make a special music program, “Alan Tam’s 30 Years Entertaining Hong Kong.” Shooting is due to start July 16 on a ship in Victoria Harbor, the first time a concert has been allowed in the harbor.
